Southwood
Learning Center offers two compatible programs which promote
self-paced learning and foster creative thinking:
The
Montessori method comprises the completion of individual
tasks in topic areas which include: language,
mathematics, science, sensorial exploration, practical life,
geography, and art.
The
Discovery method utilizes a center-based classroom,
promoting group interaction and social development.
Children choose from a variety of independent and group
activities which include: blocks, small manipulatives,
puzzles, dramatic play, science, literacy, art music and
technology.
In addition to these two
curricula, we believe cultural appreciation is an important
part of development, especially in today’s diverse world. A cultural enrichment program is offered in the afternoons
for our Montessori and Discovery classes.
Children have an opportunity to learn fine arts and
explore the world by learning about different cultures
through, music, art, foods and dress.
Our goal is encourage children to take pride in their
heritage as well as respect the unique differences in people
around us.
